Derryea Rare Breeds is a smallholding in County Mayo, keeping free range Kunekune and Middle White pigs and a mixed flock of rare breed sheep.

KUNEKUNE PIGS:
Kunekunes are the smallest domesticated breed of pig, they are extremely docile and friendly so are often kept as pets.
They are a grazing breed and get a large percentage of their daily nutrition from grass. Because of this and due to their short snout they do much less damage to the land than other breeds of pig, though some still do root.
They come in a variety of different colours and some have wattles also known as 'piri' under their chin.
They are a slow growing breed and are not classed as fully grown until 3 years old.
They usually grow to 24" - 28" tall and weigh around 80-100kg though there is variation within the breed.
They can live 12-15 years.
They can also be reared for meat and produce a delicious marbled pork.
MIDDLE WHITE PIGS:
The Middle White is a traditional breed of pig, once known as 'The London Porker' it is currently listed as Endangered on the RBST list, they are actually rarer than the Giant Panda.
The are known for their unusual appearance with their stubby noses but do less damage to the land than long nosed breeds.
The Middle White is a medium sized breed. Sows weigh around 200kg and boars around 280kg
They are an early maturing pork pig with weaners finishing out at 70kg at 4 months old.

Kunekune Piglets
All piglets are tagged, wormed and vet checked before going to their new home and come with an information pack including health/medicine records, vet check certificate, feeding information, worming/vaccination information, instructions of how to file a pig movement and more.
Male pet piglets are castrated at 4 weeks old.
Pedigree piglets will come with their pedigree certificate.
Pedigree piglets will have had their first vaccinations against Erysipelas and Porcine Parvo Virus.
Single piglets will only be sold to homes with pigs already as they need the company of their own kind
A pig herd number is required to keep pigs, even as pets. You must apply for your herd number from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, an inspection is then carried out to ensure you have sufficient space/shelter etc. (application form linked below). For more information or help on applying for your herd number feel free to get in touch! Please note it can sometimes take over 2 months from application to receive your pig herd number and you cannot bring pigs onto your property without one.
